Meet Shakira
Shakira Mosquera grew up in an urban area in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, playing games with her brothers and friends. Her strongest influence was her grandmother, who began working at age 12.
“My grandmother experienced several hardships in her life. For that reason, she taught me how to be strong and independent,” Shakira says, “and how to overcome adversities while remaining humble and always treating others respectfully.”
At the University of Puerto Rico, Shakira earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and, inspired by the environmental courses she had taken, she continued with her master’s degree in environmental health compliance. Then she worked as an Environmental Compliance Specialist with Puerto Rico’s Environmental Quality Board and held project management, operations, procurement, and health, safety, and environment roles with Arcadis and Puma Energy for 16 years before joining us as an Operations and Health, Safety, and Environment Shift Supervisor in 2019.
“I’m most proud to be part of New Fortress Energy in Puerto Rico,” Shakira says. “Our company sets the standards for liquefied natural gas operations and processes in San Juan.”
Today, Shakira continues to set the standard, as our Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental Manager. She implements and communicates compliant policies and standards for all our Puerto Rican sites to maintain the well-being of our employees, contractors, and visitors.
“What I like most is the feeling of utilizing my skills,” she says. “There are always priority tasks, and I get to help us pioneer new processes and protocols.”
Friendly, hard-working, and caring, Shakira also dreams of pioneering a non-profit organization that can help the elderly, especially those who are on their own.
“My motivation is my faith, and that faith and my family power me with positive energy,” she says. “I’m so grateful to be alive and to be a productive being, and for all the blessings I’ve received.”
