The challenge of helping protect the environment and reduce energy costs has undergone a truly transformative sea change with the launch of our floating storage and regasification terminal (FSRT) in Old Harbour Bay on Jamaica’s southern coast. The facility marks the first facility of its kind in the Caribbean.
“My favorite memory at Old Harbour has got to be July 19, 2019,” says Garfield Irvin, Marine Facility Manager for the plant. “That’s when the facility was officially unveiled to the world, and I was able to assist Wes [Edens, Founder & CEO, New Fortress Energy] in leading the Prime Minister of Jamaica and other chief delegates and stakeholders on a tour of our newly commissioned facilities. There was also a level of pride and accomplishment in seeing our team members execute their duties at the highest level.”
Docked 3.6 miles out at sea, the 125,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier ship serves as an import facility and regional energy hub. It already supplies environmentally friendly, lower-cost LNG through underwater pipelines to Jamaica Public Service's new 190-megawatt power plant in Old Harbour and our new co-generation power plant at Jamalco in Clarendon.
“Today we celebrate a significant milestone in the partnership between the people of Jamaica and New Fortress Energy,” said Prime Minister Andrew Holness at the commissioning ceremony. “We are on track to achieve an ambitious goal, which is to have at least 50 percent of our electricity generation from renewables or cleaner fuels.”
We’ve been supplying LNG in Jamaica since 2016, when we built our state-of-the-art LNG facility in Montego Bay. Since then, we’ve been delivering LNG to some of Jamaica’s leading organizations, including the University of the West Indies, Red Stripe Brewery, Caribbean Products Limited, Appleton Estate, IGL Limited, CB Chicken, Clarendon Distillers, Wisynco Group Limited, Seprod Limited, and Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited. With the addition of our Old Harbour Bay facility, we’re thrilled to continue helping this trailblazing country create a future that’s cleaner, more affordable, and brighter for us all.
