Meet Garrett
Garrett Lam grew up in central Texas, in a laid-back, close-knit community where everyone knew everyone else. He helped on the family farm after school, did residential carpentry during the summers, and spent his free time in the countryside.
His grandfathers instilled in him both empathy and discipline. He still strives to emulate these family role models. Indeed, one specifically helped inspire him to the career that has led him to become the Project Engineer for our Fast LNG (FLNG) program.
“Since my paternal grandfather had a successful career while at a large engineering, procurement, and construction company,” Garrett explains, “I followed both him and my father to continue working on large-scale international offshore projects within the energy industry. My first assignment was in Nigeria, and since then, I’ve worked in Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and now Mexico.”
Garrett coordinates among specialized vendors, construction contractors, and commissioning teams during the development phase to ensure compliance with engineering technical requirements before handing over the final product to the operations team.
“Our team shares the same innovative philosophy to continue to push boundaries,” he says. “I love working with and learning from some of the industry’s brightest visionaries who encourage breaking from the norm and allow me to work creatively – and who have also become good friends.“
He proudly recalls the journey that led to NFE’s FLNG1 becoming operational.
“We have come so far from the first rigs arriving in 2021,” he says. “I was fortunate to be a speaker during our Investor Day in 2022, to be one of the first to greet the drilling ship in Mexico in 2023, and to spend more than 150 days offshore during the project’s final phase. It has been extremely rewarding.”
Garrett finds his motivation in moments such as these that help improve others' lives, whether through providing cleaner and more efficient fuel, offering opportunities for community engagement and employment, teaching and learning from coworkers, or volunteering to give back to his neighbors.
“My hope is that at the end of any project,” he says, “things will be better than when we found them. That’s a successful project.”
As a youth, Garrett played basketball all over Texas, and dreamed of seeing the rest of the world. Chef and author Anthony Bourdain further sparked his love for adventure and his desire to explore diverse cultures and cuisines. Today, he can often be found hiking, mountaineering, and traveling solo to follow his own path. This year he plans to reach the summit of Volcán Tajumulco, the highest point in Central America.
