Our Jamaica LNG facilities are the
beginning of a brighter future

ENERGY FILLED STORY

Welcome to Jamaica,
where our
story began

“Irie, mon!” Welcome to Jamaica, where our story began.

A few years ago, we saw a tremendous opportunity to transform this small country in a big way by creating access to a cleaner, more affordable energy source: natural gas.

In 2015, we began investing in Montego Bay (“MoBay”) on the island’s northwestern coast, where we developed our first liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility. Just under four years later, we unveiled our second Jamaican liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, in Old Harbour Bay in the south. Today, these two fully operational liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities are addressing the country’s need for modern energy infrastructure by supplying clean, affordable natural gas.

Facilities are certainly gateways for the efficient delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG)– but they can also be gateways for broader benefits, such as affordable energy, new jobs, and better environmental outcomes.

For example, the introduction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) significantly improved Jamaica’s economic stability in areas including:

  • Diversified energy supply, reducing its dependence on oil from 971 percent to 16 percent2 in less than four years, and meeting over two-thirds3 of its average daily electricity from our two terminals, which provide natural gas for more than 450 megawatts of efficient, modern, gas-fired power.
  • Investments in renewable energy. LNG serves as a reliable, low-carbon back-up to intermittent renewable power, and its introduction is helping to accelerate the integration of renewable energy.  Since we entered the country, Jamaica has invested in over 80 megawatts of renewable energy4, and expects to be using 50 percent5 renewable energy by 2030.

Our liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities have also created a new industry with new local jobs, including engineers, facility operators, maintenance staff, drivers, office workers, and more. We are further investing resources in helping develop that new workforce and our LNG community through innovative educational opportunities.

Making the switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG) isn’t just about cost reduction or steady employment. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a safe and renewable-friendly energy source that produces lower carbon emissions than many fuel alternatives. Our customers are helping clean up the environment by converting to liquefied natural gas (LNG) – reducing their CO2 emissions the equivalent of planting millions of trees and removing thousands of passenger cars from the road.6

“The sustainability and operational capabilities that are made possible by LNG make our partnership with New Fortress Energy a win-win for the environment and our business,” says Ricardo Nuncio of Heineken Jamaica, who served as Managing Director of the country’s iconic Red Stripe Brewery from 2016 to 2019.

We’re proud that our liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Jamaica are connecting our customers to a whole new world of affordable energy and making a real difference in people’s lives. It’s a long-term investment in helping the country transition away from costly and harmful oil-based fuels in favor of the economic, environmental, and community benefits of liquefied natural gas (LNG). For us, Jamaica is the first stop on our journey to a brighter world built on positive energy.
