Following a decade of natural disasters and financial crises, the island of Puerto Rico is now facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered nearly everything, drastically increasing the number of residents without jobs – and without the resources to get the food and medical supplies they and their families need to survive.
We knew we had to help our neighbors on this beautiful island. That’s why our New Fortress Energy Foundation partnered with United Way of Puerto Rico to ensure our local LNG communities and families have access to enough food -- rice, beans, seasonings, and more -- that supplies at least three meals per person, and plenty of quarantine essentials such as masks, sanitizers, wipes, and disinfectant soaps to keep them healthy and safe.
In partnership with United Way of Puerto Rico, our New Fortress Energy Foundation distributed enough supplies to help around 400 people at two senior citizens’ homes -- Centro Cultural y de Servicios de Cantera and Centro Santa Luisa – and four children’s shelters – Hogares Rafaela Ybarra, Casa de Niños Manuel Fernández Juncos, Fundación Hogar Niñito Jesús, and Hogar de Niñas de Cupey.
“The main role of United Way of Puerto Rico is to be the liaison among corporations, employees, and individuals committed to improving the living conditions of people with the greatest needs in our community,” said Samuel González, president of the United Way of Puerto Rico. “Since we began the dialogue with New Fortress Energy, we have known about the great commitment of this company to Puerto Rico. With the donation we received, we will be able to impact hundreds of families who would not otherwise have access to food and articles for personal protection. We are infinitely grateful for the philanthropic gesture of New Fortress Energy.”
